Irish Horse Board publications

Starting in January 2008, the Irish Horse Board staff have been transferred to the new umbrella organization, Horse Sport Ireland.  IHB information can be found on their website under the heading, Breeding.

The Irish Horse Board (IHB) the IHB Is a co-operative society with over 12,000 members and a board of 13 directors. Of the 13 directors, 10 represent five electoral regions and 3 are appointed by the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. The objectives of the board are to promote the Irish Sport Horse, to maintain The Irish Sport Horse Studbook, to operate schemes to improve quality & to promote Equestrian Tourism & Equestrian Education. Shareholders receive many of their publications as part of membership. Irish Horse Board publications are available in printed format, downloadable PDFs from their website and offers all of its print publications available on CD-ROM .

Used in combination, the publications of the Irish Horse Board give the full details of current status of Irish Draught horses, whether they are listed in the Irish Horse Registers as for stallions: RID Approved or Unapproved S1, S2, Suppl. 1 and Suppl. 2 ; and for mares: as RID, AID, ID, and for their progeny. Irish Draught geldings are also eligible for RID inspection but to date no listing as been published. The Irish Horse Board is also responsible for issuing of Irish Horse Passports.

Archival publications housed at the Irish Horse Board, Maynooth, Co. Kildare include:

(breeding record)  (pedigree and produce) (mare for slaughter written across this record)

Irish Draught Horse Book, Register of Mares, the earliest of these are large handwritten ledger volumes, approximately 60 centimeters in length, more recent volumes are smaller and type written. The older listings include page by page information on the mares that passed inspection; owners / breeder name; notes on breeding, stallions used, progeny, notes on if they went to slaughter, or died, etc. Some of these volumes are in very brittle condition and should probably not be used or loaned. A paper ledger no longer exists. Up-to-date register information for mares is today kept in their computerised databases, although they do retain original copy of foal marking charts.

Horse Breeding Act 1934, List of Exempted Stallions, sample volume covering stallion from 1902-1924. A large approximately 60 centimeter ledger. A listing of stallions bought and sold by the Department and used in their breeding schemes. Many old Irish Draught stallions of the period are recorded in these volumes. Interesting to note, for many of the Clydesdale stallions listed, notation indicates they were castrated after their first stud season because they produced inferior stock. Irish Draught stallions on the other hand, were bought and sold and never a mention of any kind leading one to believe that they were good producers of quality stock.
